  — Civil and military archaeology in Europe —

Military archaeology provides a fundamental perspective on how to understand the changes experienced in all societies throughout history. Nevertheless, the army and society have been very closely linked to each other, so the relations between the military and civil society must be jointly considered, with their different connotations.
In continental Europe, the army was the most important player in the Romanisation process; apart from the conquests, it also carried out other tasks: it controlled the oppressed people, founded and built cities and infrastructure, integrated religious worships, created commercial routes and disseminated manufacturing, thus fostering the transmission and assimilation of instruments and structures in a large territory and initiating a certain cultural and technological globalisation whose social, political and economic connotations can be seen in the world today.
