Medieval Written Culture —
The study of medieval written culture is wider than the
mere study of literature and its possible
interpretations in a radically different semiotic
universe. It also encompasses the material means of
transmission, whether these are codices, birch bark
letters or wooden tablets.
Approaching medieval letters in these two complimentary
ways (an analysis of the contents as well as of their
means of transmission) allows us to understand to which
extent intellectual culture was dependant on material
means of production.
